Catherine Logan - It’s your idea, protect it overseas too
Catherine Logan, Partner at Hunt & Hunt, in the Daily Telegraph advises that businesses considering exporting their goods or services overseas may unavoidably risk exploitation of their intellectual property. Although Australia is a party to a number of treaties and international conventions regarding intellectual property, Catherine said that the degree of international protection may be insufficient.
Catherine Logan outlines a few steps for a business to protect its intellectual property in export markets:
- make a register of your IP assets
- find out how assets can be protected under Australian law
- register all significant assets under their respective registration systems
- secure assets that cannot be protected by registration by contractual means and keeping them secret
- check details of international registrations of intellectual property
