Designs system celebrates 100th anniversary

IP Australia has celebrated today the 100th anniversary of the first Federally registered design, being an overall combination garment by Albert Holdsworth. Since then, prominent Australian designs recognised by IP Australia have included:

  • Primal Prawnstar – fishing lures which mimic nature with flicking tails and lifelike swimming movements;
  • Albion Cricket Helmet – a fixture with the Australian cricket team; and
  • Speedo Fastskin suit - a high performance fabric, a streamlined full-body design that took the world by storm at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In 2006, GM Holden Ltd, Resmed Ltd and Capral Aluminium Limited filed the most design applications. The industries that filed the most design applications in 2006 were tools and hardware, household goods and packaging and containers.

In 2006, 70% of designs were filed by Australian entities.
