Despite copyright controversy, Angelina Jolie debuts new film

According to Adli Law Group,
Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, “In the Blood of Honey” opened a few days ago and is now playing in Los Angeles theaters. Accompanying this love story set in war-torn Eastern Europe is a whiff of scandal involving accusations that Jolie illegally lifted material from another artist’s work.
A Croatian journalist who wrote 2007 book, “The Soul Shattering,” has claimed Jolie violated his copyright by taking material directly from his book without his permission and using it to make “In the Land of Blood and Honey.”
The book and the movie do have some similarities. Both tell the story of a woman who is imprisoned and subjected to the horrors of war during the early 1990s Balkan conflict.
However, generic plot contours and common tropes, like the idea of a love story set during a war, cannot be copyrighted because they are too generic and common. The journalist’s best argument may be that he discussed a movie adaptation of his book with a producer who eventually went on to work with Jolie before Jolie made her film.
The journalist sought a temporary restraining order that would have prevented “In the Land of Blood and Honey” from opening, but his motion was denied. The journalist has been criticized because he evidently knew as early as the first part of 2010 that Jolie was making this film, but only waited until a few weeks before the finished movie was to be released to file his lawsuit.
Jolie, for her part, has said she never read “The Soul Shattering” and has seemed indifferent to the journalists’ claims because, she said, such allegations are “par for the course” and “happen on almost every film.”
