Kodak files patent lawsuits against Apple, HTC

According to Adli Law Group,
Even though rumors have been flying that Eastman Kodak Co. is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, that has not gotten in the way of its desire to protect its camera technologies patent rights.
This past week, Kodak filed patent infringement lawsuits against two smartphone makers, Apple Inc. and HTC Corp., claiming that the two had infringed on its patented technology.
Kodak owns a series of patents that protect the transmission of digital images from cameras. These patents involve camera technologies developed by an inventor and Kodak researcher who has developed more than 190 patented technologies. According to Kodak, this innovator is among the pioneers in several different digital camera technologies, and Kodak certainly wants to protect the value of his discoveries.
Specifically, the patents involved in these lawsuits concern the transfer of digital images between devices without having to download the file from the camera to a computer. According to the lawsuit, Apple and HTC are violating patent law by using this technology without Kodak’s permission.
This may be part of Kodak’s plan to try to avoid entering into bankruptcy. Apparently, the 131-year-old company has been selling off many of its patents in order to generate revenue and may have discovered that the digital imaging patents were being infringed upon. These lawsuits may then help to increase the value of their patent portfolio.
It may be too early to speculate about how much money is at stake in these patent enforcement litigations, but considering the players involved, Kodak is hoping that it will have significant value.
