Pain of a music industry in transition (Anthony O’Grady)
Music journalist Anthony O’Grady in the Sydney Morning Herald observes that music retaileres need to give up or work with online copying, noting the difficulties people have with the prohibition against copying music. Anthony states that download culture would not exist without a corresponding upload culture (eg there are online communities where individuals get kudos for the number of files they upload to the internet). Anthony notes that it is not just teenagers; there are at least 50 million blogs offering free songs and albums, most of them against copyright.
Anthony then provides an interesting history of copying music, from tapes, CDs to mp3s and regards the internet as an “open sesame” to an Aladdin’s cave of musical treasure.
