Regional Patent Attorney - International IP Firm with significant Asia Pacific operations
Fast growing international IP firm with significant Asia Pacific operations, seek a regional patent attorney to be based in its Asia Pacific business. The business has a number and variety of legal entities to facilitate its trade as a law firm, brand protection agency and patent and trade mark practice in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Philippines. The position will be based in Hong Kong, but involve substantial Asian travel, at least initially.
The Role
Reporting to the patent agency International Services Head in Europe and the Asia Pacific practice head, this role comprises managing and developing the Group’s patent services in Asia (esp. China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Thailand , Philippines, Vietnam & India). It includes supervising local patent attornies and the administrator/paralegal teams, skills and capacity development and training, client management and marketing. The job involves:
# working closely with the patent agencies International Services Head and the Asia Pacific practice head, as well as national country managers to strengthen existing patent practices (Phase 1) and marketing and development of new patent clients (Phase 2), including working on and implementing a business plan agreed with the patent agency International Services Head
# overall responsibility for all patent agency work in Asian offices
# local capacity and skills development and assistance to country managers on training and development of local patent expertise and an international business approach
# working with a large diverse team around Asia, as part of a larger IP focused business
# working with commercial and litigation attorneys in patent matters in Asia
# working as part of the international patent agency group in relation to other client matters outside Asia as appropriate
The ideal candidate will:-
# be a European, US or Australasian qualified patent attorney
# have at least 2-5 years professional experience in a well known practice; with in house experience desirable, and demonstrating an expert understanding of international patent practice and issues and considerable direct client experience
# be capable of handling a range of technical disciplines, with a strong specialization in one or more, with electronics/software/telecoms an advantage give such focus in Asia
# substantial high quality drafting experience
# experience in national and PCT filings in Asia, with understanding of local issues in one or two markets an advantage
# expertise in PCT work
# substantial experience in patenting strategy and procurement
# be an enthusiastic traveller and have good cultural awareness
# want to work in an informal but entrepreneurial and fast growing environment
# have demonstrable people skills and an ability and desire to work cooperatively and in a team environment

* Conor Med Systems Inc v Angiotech & UBC - Blake Dawson acted for Conor who sought revocation of patents held by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc and the University of British Columbia over taxol-coated stents in the Federal Court. This was the first case to consider whether the inclusion of an additional patentee, who has no entitlement to the claimed invention, renders the patent liable to be revoked under section 138(3)(a) of the Patents Act 1990.

Domain Name Law and Regulation - Speaker Profiles
Bruce Tonkin is Chief Technology Officer of MelbourneIT and an elected director of the board of ICANN (the international organisation responsible for managing the DNS). As immediate past Chair of ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO), he was closely involved in the development of policy in controversial areas of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and WHOIS services. Bruce previously directed a research venture at Monash University in partnership with Telstra and Siemans, and coordinated the operations of the Research Data Network Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).
Chris Disspain is CEO of au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) the self regulatory body that governs the .au domain name space and manages the domain name system in Australia. Under his leadership auDA it has become selffunding, introduced competition into the domain name market in .au, simplified the policy regime and introduced an industry code of practice. Chris is the Chair of ICANN’s Country Code Name
Supporting Organisation, the body that represents the interests of country code top level domain managers. He is also a Director of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Organisation and a member of the United Nations Secretary General’s Internet Governance Forum Advisory Group.

Position Summary
This is a mid - level attorney position responsible for providing legal services with principal focus on supporting one or more business groups . This attorney will have more broadly defined responsibilities supporting the company’s transactional team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serve as a primary point of contact on legal matters originating from one or more business organizations
• Manage commercial contracting activities for such business organizations, including drafting and negotiating world wide commercial terms for sale of hardware and software products, inbound and outbound hardware supply/license agreements, sales distribution agreements, all manner of marketing agreements, including joint marketing, and sponsorships, and marketing legal review of communications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Approximately 3-8 years of applicable commercial contracting experience, ideally with some direct experience supporting business organizations (combined law firm and in-house experience preferred)
• Exceptional communication skills written and verbal, organizational abilities and proven attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task and produce quality work product in a fast-paced, stimulating environment
• Demonstrated excellent business judgment and the ability to form strong working relationships with demanding internal clients while maintaining firm adherence to proper legal standards

About the Legal Department:
NVIDIA’s legal department currently includes 10 attorneys, 5 of whom are Directors (2 in the Patent group, 1 in Sales/Marketing, 1 in Corporate and 1 in Asia). They are assigned to cover different areas of the company’s businesses and functional groups, and work in a collaborative virtual team network.
