Mark Krenzer - Clayton Utz

Mark Krenzer is a Special Counsel in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology group. Prior to joining Clayton Utz in 1999 he practised in intellectual property law for five years at another top tier commercial firm in Melbourne. Mark Krenzer advises a range of clients operating in diverse fields. His clients are drawn from areas such as research and media organisations, government, entertainment and service providers and manufacturers of consumer and industrial products.

There are two key ways in which Mark Krenzer helps his clients. The first is the protection of and disputes regarding trade marks (both registered and unregistered), copyright, designs and confidential information. Natalie Hazel - Blake Dawson

Natalie Hazel’s practice at Blake Dawson focuses on intellectual property law and food regulation. Natalie Hazel advises clients in relation to copyright, trade marks, licensing, distribution, marketing and advertising, consumer protection, passing off, sponsorship and confidential information.

In particular, Natalie Hazel advises a range of clients on legal issues associated with proposed marketing and advertising initiatives, and the licensing and control of intellectual property rights, including drafting licence and distribution agreements. Natalie Hazel recently completed a 6 month secondment to Insurance Australia Group where she was responsible for advising on a broad range of intellectual property issues. Natalie has also advised clients on issues arising under the new Food Standards Code and related legislation.



Miriam Stiel - Allens Arthur Robinson

Miriam Stiel of Allens Arthur Robinson is a commercial litigator, specialising in intellectual property. Miriam Stiel advises on all aspects of intellectual property law and has acted in Court proceedings involving copyright, trade mark, patent and design infringement, breaches of confidential information, misleading and deceptive conduct and passing off. Miriam Stiel has also been involved in proceedings in the Australian Patent and Trade Marks Offices and in international domain name disputes.

Miriam Stiel works with Australian and multi-national corporations from a range of industries, including media and entertainment, luxury goods, sport, technology, telecommunications, manufacturing and financial services, to develop strategies for the protection, commercialisation and enforcement of their IP rights. Miriam Stiel has extensive experience in the area of anti-counterfeiting. She has worked closely with police and prosecuting authorities on criminal investigations and with the Australian Customs Service to prevent the importation of counterfeit goods into Australia. Miriam Stiel has been involved in making submissions to and appearing before government inquiries and meeting with government ministers and officials on intellectual property issues.

Miriam Stiel also has broad commercial litigation experience and has acted in product liability cases, contractual and advertising disputes and Corporations Law matters in Courts throughout Australia. Miriam Stiel has extensive experience running and defending applications for urgent interlocutory relief. Miriam works closely with clients to develop strategies for managing risks, avoiding disputes and handling dispute-related publicity and is experienced in alternative dispute resolution.



John Dieckmann - Allens Arthur Robinson

John Dieckmann, Special Counsel at Allens Arthur Robinson, specialises in the area of information technology and intellectual property law, with particular focus on infrastructure and business process outsourcing, system development and integration projects, e-commerce initiatives and technology procurement, licensing, protection and enforcement. John Dieckmann has advised some of Australia’s largest companies, government departments and technology providers on significant technology projects, and regularly acts for large corporate users in relation to IT&T procurement and the resolution of disputes concerning IT projects. He also advises on the management, licensing and commercialisation of intellectual property and the intellectual property and information technology aspects of significant commercial transactions.

We are looking for a talented Patent Engineer to take an active role within the IP department by assiting with the day to day functionalities and ensuring that the commercial needs of the are met by facilitating patent activities in line with patent objectives and patent requirements. This is a key role within a global organisation which will liaise heavily with internal design engineers, the Patent Attorney, and International Patent regulatory authorities.

The main day to day duties will include:

* Assiting in the day to day management of the patent portfolio
* Advising engineers to patentability
* Conducting patent searches, Drafting patents, attending to filing of patents, prosecution and advising on infringement matters
* Reporting to the senior patent engineer

In order to be a success in this role candidates will need to have the following qualifications:

* Qualifications in Engineering / Computer Science or a related area
* Competencies in US patent law and rules

An opportunity exists to be an integral part of the legal team at UNSW dedicated to the support of externally funded research & development at UNSW. As part of a small legal team comprising three lawyers and two paralegals you will review and draft contracts licenses and other documentation, as well as advise on IP issues. In this busy role, you will work closely with staff of the Grants Management Office the Research Strategy Office, and researchers at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Law.

This role requires an individual with sound knowledge of contract law, property law and commercial licensing of intellectual property in addition to demonstrated skills in contract negotiation. Domain Name Law and Regulation - Speaker Profiles

Bruce Tonkin is Chief Technology Officer of MelbourneIT and an elected director of the board of ICANN (the international organisation responsible for managing the DNS). As immediate past Chair of ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO), he was closely involved in the development of policy in controversial areas of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and WHOIS services. Bruce previously directed a research venture at Monash University in partnership with Telstra and Siemans, and coordinated the operations of the Research Data Network Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

Chris Disspain is CEO of au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) the self regulatory body that governs the .au domain name space and manages the domain name system in Australia. Under his leadership auDA it has become selffunding, introduced competition into the domain name market in .au, simplified the policy regime and introduced an industry code of practice. Chris is the Chair of ICANN’s Country Code Name
Supporting Organisation, the body that represents the interests of country code top level domain managers. He is also a Director of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Organisation and a member of the United Nations Secretary General’s Internet Governance Forum Advisory Group.

Neil Brown has had a distinguished career in Government and the law; and actively involved in politics as a Minister, Shadow Minister, legislator and as a delegate to the United Nations and other international organisations. He is now undertaking a major role in mediation, arbitration, the conduct of inquiries, advocacy, general advice and consulting. Neil is a member of the Panel of Conciliators at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes ( ICSID) at Washington, USA and a prominent panelist for the resolution of disputes under ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).

David Lindsay is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Monash University teaching Intellectual Property Law, Copyright, Law of the Internet, Communications Law & Regulation and Trusts. He is the author of many articles and reports in the areas of intellectual property law, Internet law, communications law and privacy law. David is also a contributing author for Copyright and Designs Butterworths, Sydney, 1996) and the author of International Domain Name Law: ICANN and the UDRP (Hart Publishing, Oxford, 2007).

Tony Staley is the Chair of au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA). He is a former Chairman of the Council of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Scheme and former member of the Telecommunications Industry Development Authority. In 2003, he served as a voting member of ICANN’s Nominating Committee for selecting ICANN board members as the delegate of the country-code top-level domain registries. Tony was Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia from 1993 to 1999, and Minister for Communications from 1977 to 1980.
