Senior Legal Officer University

Our client is currently looking for a highly motivated and experienced lawyer to join its close-knit team. In this stimulating role, you will provide strategic legal advice and assistance to senior staff and, when necessary, its governing Council on a wide range of matters including, preparation and negotiation of legal contracts, commercial law, employment law, copyright, intellectual property, and the University’s own Act, and other legislation and legal issues arising from bodies such as the Office of the Information Commissioner and the Equal Opportunity Commission.

To be considered for this highly sought after opportunity, you will ideally be admitted in WA or be eligible for admission, have proven abilities in communicating with a variety of individuals, work autonomously and co-operatively, as part of a team. Good organisational skills, combined with the commitment to apply relevant and applicable policies, procedures and legislation in the day to day performance of the function of the position are also required. Bruce Tonkin is Chief Technology Officer of MelbourneIT and an elected director of the board of ICANN (the international organisation responsible for managing the DNS). As immediate past Chair of ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO), he was closely involved in the development of policy in controversial areas of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and WHOIS services. Bruce previously directed a research venture at Monash University in partnership with Telstra and Siemans, and coordinated the operations of the Research Data Network Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

Neil Brown has had a distinguished career in Government and the law; and actively involved in politics as a Minister, Shadow Minister, legislator and as a delegate to the United Nations and other international organisations. He is now undertaking a major role in mediation, arbitration, the conduct of inquiries, advocacy, general advice and consulting. Neil is a member of the Panel of Conciliators at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes ( ICSID) at Washington, USA and a prominent panelist for the resolution of disputes under ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).

David Lindsay is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Monash University teaching Intellectual Property Law, Copyright, Law of the Internet, Communications Law & Regulation and Trusts. He is the author of many articles and reports in the areas of intellectual property law, Internet law, communications law and privacy law. David is also a contributing author for Copyright and Designs Butterworths, Sydney, 1996) and the author of International Domain Name Law: ICANN and the UDRP (Hart Publishing, Oxford, 2007).

Tony Staley is the Chair of au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA). He is a former Chairman of the Council of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Scheme and former member of the Telecommunications Industry Development Authority. In 2003, he served as a voting member of ICANN’s Nominating Committee for selecting ICANN board members as the delegate of the country-code top-level domain registries. Tony was Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia from 1993 to 1999, and Minister for Communications from 1977 to 1980.

Director of Intellectual Property

Major, Lindsey & Africa has been exclusively engaged by SonoSite, Inc. to conduct this search for its newly created position of Director of Intellectual Property.

The Director of IP will be responsible for directing and executing the intellectual property strategy for the company. Duties include managing patent litigation matters (including the management of outside counsel), counseling the business on IP matters related to product development, and overseeing licensing activities and patent prosecution. Success in this role will require thoughtful leadership and the drive to execute strategy in an interactive and open environment. The ability to interact effectively with internal and external audiences and capture the big picture vision is critical.

Required expertise and characteristics:

J. D. degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school.
Minimum of 10 years related experience required, experience at the 15+-year range is ideal.
Experience managing patent litigation and providing IP counsel to product development efforts, including collaborating with R&D staff on patent strategy.
Demonstrated understanding of technology in the electrical arts is required. Undergraduate degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (EE or ME) preferred.
Medical device industry experience is preferred.
A combination of experience gained both in a law firm and the in-house environment is required.
Ability to communication effectively with engineers and business and legal professionals, internal and external to the company, including senior management. Ability to distill complexity with clarity and precision and act decisively.
Ability to develop effective working relationships in a collegial environment. Ability to be a team player and work collaboratively to obtain results.
Self-starter and assertive.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
