The Australian - ‘iPod’ law passed

The Australian has reported that the Copyright Amendment Bill 2006 has been passed in: ‘iPod’ law passed

Some notes of interest from the The Australian article:

Users of iPods and other digital music players will no longer be acting illegally under the new copyright laws, which will make it legal for people to transfer their CD collections to computers or iPods. New exceptions for cultural institutions will allow schools and libraries to use copyright material for non-commercial purposes. However, the penalties for “pirates” will be tougher as the new copyright laws will introduce enforcement measures such as on-the-spot fines and that proceeds of crime remedies to tackle copyright piracy.

A review of the copyright laws was in response to the free trade agreement with the United States and the rise in digital technology.

Nicola Roxon, Labor’s Legal Affairs Spokesperson, is reported to be delighted that the Government had implemented significant changes recommended in the Senate Committee Report and endorsed by Labor. According to The Australian, Nicola Roxon said that it was important to make sure creative industries were supported and consumers were protected.
