"The UK’s most valuable retail brands 2007"

Class 46 - top of the class for European trade mark news: The Telegraph today reports on a new brand ranking survey, which focuses on retails brands in the United Kindom. The new report by brand valuation consultancy Intangible Business identifies Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer, as Britain’s most valuable retail brand.

Intangible Business ranked 100 brands, looking at public sales figures for the last five years and attributing a score to measures such as future growth, price positioning, customer service and brand heritage. Stuart Whitwell, joint managing director of Intangible Business, is quoted as saying: “2008 is starting to show signs of a slowdown. Strong brands are more important than ever.” Among the worst performers were Woolworths and Matalan; among the best performing brands were Aldi, Primark and Specsavers. According to an article by the Press Association the report said that as many as 86% of the biggest retail brands originated in the UK, followed by the US, Germany and Sweden.

The report also includes five “ones to watch” including Early Learning Centre, Ann Summers, World Duty Free, Boden and Jaeger. Finally, the “strongest brands” in the report, defined by the report as those brands “punching above their weight”, is headed up by John Lewis, closely followed by Selfridges, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose. Waitrose was also named the strongest brand in the grocery sector.
